Shoulder Pain Q & A
What can cause shoulder pain?
There is a dynamic relationship between the shoulder and the neck/upper back that must be considered. Our unique diagnostic exam and evaluation of this relationship helps unravel the cause, and thus direct a treatment program that gets results. Acute injuries, strains and sprains, instability, dislocations, frozen shoulder, and pinched nerves can limit your range of motion. This also causes weakness and stiffness in the shoulder and arm. Treatment for shoulder pain should be administered as soon as possible so it does not get worse, or intrude on day-to-day activities.
How is shoulder pain treated?
Once a diagnosis is performed to uncover what is causing your shoulder pain, Dr. Sean can recommend options to promote healing. They can include any of the following:
Rest – Avoiding strenuous activities that might aggravate the shoulder muscles.
Immobilization – Use of a brace to keep the area immobilized will prevent re-injury to the area.
Physical therapy and exercise – Sometimes a referral to a physical therapist will be prescribed to customize a program of stretching and strengthening exercises that work to relieve your pain and help prevent future problems.
Corrective posture – Hunching should be avoided so as not to aggravate pain in the neck or shoulders.
How long with it take before I experience relief?
Full relief will be dependent on the nature of your shoulder pain and the underlying cause. To get back to one hundred percent capacity, a few factors will come into play such as the severity of the injury, the length of time you’ve had it, and any ongoing health conditions that could prevent you from healing quickly. After the first treatment with Dr. Sean, most patients find significant pain relief and increased range of motion in the shoulder. It is best to contact the offices to find out the treatment options available to start the healing process and get you back on the road to your best health.
